The Fight Club star was accompanying his famous fiancée Angelina Jolie to the premiere of her latest film Maleficent when he was assaulted.
A man, later identified as Vitalii Seduik, leapt over a barrier at the star-studded screening heading straight for Brangelina.
He lunged for the 50-year-old actor despite being surrounded by several burly security guards and in the presence of the world's media.
The attacker's fist managed to make contact, but authorities acted quickly to prevent further violence.

Ange's husband-to-be was pictured looking angry after the incident but sources say he was left with no serious injuries.
Los Angeles Police Department arrested Sediuk for misdemeanour battery and he remained in a police cell overnight.

He is currently being held pending payment of $20,000 bail.
LAPD Hollywood spokesperson Sergeant Leonard Calderon revealed: "The officers who were handling him said it looked like it was intentional, but at this point it remains to be determined."
It's not yet known if Brad Pitt intends to press charges.
Seduik is a 25-year-old television reporter from the Ukraine who has a history of causing havoc at red carpet events.

The badly behaved journalist has previously grabbed Leonardo DiCaprio's crotch while at the Santa Barbara Film Festival and he invaded the stage while Brit songbird Adele gave her Grammy Award acceptance speech.
And Will Smith failed to see the funny side when Seduik planted a kiss on his cheek.
The Hancock star famously gave him a little slap.
Perhaps he likes to be wined and dined first...

The Italian FA have confirmed that Lazio youth player Joseph Minala is 17 and not in his 40s as it has been alleged. Joseph Minala An African website called senego.net reported that Minala had told them that he was 41 years old earlier this year and pictures of the player, who admittedly looks much older, went viral with fans finding it incredible he was so young.
