Simon Cowell's gay sex drug shock: Amanda Holden mistook his sniffing salts as 'poppers'!
It was assumed he was inhaling “poppers’’, used as a sex enhancer by the gay community.
Fellow judge Amanda Holden, 43, who spied him having a sniff, said: “I asked him if they were poppers.”
And a worker on X Factor USA thought the same.
But new dad Cowell has laughed off the suggestion he uses anything to enhance his sexual stamina.
He explained the “drugs’’ are smelling salts which he uses to clear his head.
Cowell said: “If I’ve got a headache it’s good for it.
"I need them for long days.
"But here’s a true story.
"I was sniffing them in a meeting with an American guy.
“I use them all the time.
"I think this is normal.
"And this guy is staring at me.
"And at the end I’m thinking: ‘Christ! He thinks I’m taking poppers.’”
Cowell may be worth a cool £225million but he still wants more.
He has changed the contracts of the Britain’s Got Talent acts this year to make extra cash off them.“I use them all the time”Simon Cowell on his sniffing salts
In the past, finalists had to give a percentage of their earnings to him for 12 months after the show ended.
But some stars, such as dancers Diversity who won in 2009, now make more money than they did a few years ago and Cowell does not get a penny.
He said: “Diversity have done the best.
"They’re doing stadiums now but they don’t make money for us any more.
"We have changed the contract.
"We are catered for now in the contract.
"If we got a Diversity we would make more money this time, which is only fair.”
Meanwhile Alesha Dixon, 36, has played coy over rumours she has been asked to be the fourth judge on X Factor this year.
Fellow BGT judge David Walliams, 42 joked: “She is holding out for more money.”
Cowell said that, despite being a proud dad to two-month-old son Eric and loved-up with girlfriend Lauren Silverman, 37, he has not gone soft when it comes to his day job as a judge on the new series of BGT.
“If a youngster auditions for the show and they’re not very good, I am not going to say: ‘You’re fantastic’ just because I’ve had a baby.
"I will still say what I feel.”
The dog lover is also upset that the animal acts auditioning this year were not a patch on 2012 winner Pudsey the dancing pooch.
He added: “We had a lot of animals this year but they were dreadful.
"We had a performing owl.
"I’d always wanted to see one.
"But as viewers will see tonight, it doesn’t quite work out.”
